AP Art Update and Art Pick-up

I am super excited to share that we have had a lot of great applications for AP Art for next school year. Thank you to everyone who took the time to send in their applications and pictures.

If you are going by school this week please do not forget to pick up your art. I have organized it by class (8.1, VC1, 6.2, etc.) and it is all in boxes on a table outside of my classroom. If you are not coming back until next year but have art you would like to keep I am happy to let you pick it up when I see you next. Rising 9th graders - if you are not going to be able to get your art please email me so I know what you would like me to pull aside and save for you.

Last Week of Classes

Year Long AP Art Application

I am excited to share that the application process for the AP Art class (Visual Composition 1) is now open to any interested 7th graders. Go here to apply!

Chalk Your Walk

Thursday: Complete artwork by creating a background.  Optional: Write a short story about the animal that includes the animal’s environment and explains why the colors are bright and bold instead of realistic. Don't forget to send me a pic of your work!

For Fun: Draw a sidewalk message! Connect with your neighbors and friends by leaving them a beautiful picture, positive sidewalk chalk message, a riddle or a joke. It is a chance to make someone smile even though you can't be with them. If you don't have chalk you can make some chalk paint just by mixing corn starch, water, and food coloring together. Find the recipe here.

Be A Rock Star!

Wednesday: Draw chosen animal on good paper (use sketchbook paper if that is all you have) and trace with oil pastel, crayon, marker or colored pencil (use what you have). Color animal with "fauvist" colors. 

For Fun: Be a Rock Star! Find a pebble or a rock in your yard, paint it, sharpie it or write something inspirational on it and then go for a walk. Put it somewhere someone will find it. Here is a website with a lot of ideas, tips, and tricks for your rock painting.

Tuesday Fun!

If you are working on this week's art lesson today you need to:
Read lesson here and practice drawing two different animals in your sketchbook. Send pic to me.

Just for fun:
Use your cell phone and the things around you to find letters! Do you have a window in your house that looks like an "o" or a handle on an object that could be a "c"??? Open up your eyes to what is around you and see if you can observe enough letters to make a word! Use the free version of this photo editing software if you want to put them all together or change to black and white. Have some fun and remember to send me the picture!

Color Schemes

Artists use color schemes for many different reasons. Sometimes artists can be identified just by the colors they use in their art. I have a fun challenge for you! Can you identify the characters below just by looking at their color schemes?  Leave your answers in the comments!

Week 3

Today is the beginning of Week 3 Distance Learning. We are going to focus on artists this week and learning more about some of the more famous artists from our past. I will be posting one Nearpod module a day for you. Everything is submitted electronically so it's super easy. Please remember to use your first and last name when doing the module so I have record of your work.

AP Art, VC1, Visual Compers, High School Art, Yeah - you!

One of the biggest things I have heard this week from my teacher friends is how much we miss you all! There are still many of you I have not heard from at all and if you are currently enrolled in my AP Visual Composition 1 class then you need to be in touch!

This is a year long high school class and I want to make sure when we go back to school that you are not having to make up work you did not do in order to receive credit. We don't know the answers to all the questions about grading but learning is much more than grades. Please get in touch and let me know how I can assist you.

Grow Your Sketchbook Practice

The longer we stay home the more it becomes important to keep our creative practice going. Using a sketchbook daily is a wonderful was to be creative, a good way to release some of your feelings, and a way to document our current situation.

Artist Karen Abend is offering a free online workship that will cover different ways to pump up your sketchbook and inspire you. This is an optional activity that I highly recommend for anyone reading it. Again - it's FREE. Find it here.

Found Object Color Wheel

Happy Thursday! Today I thought it would be fun if we made art without using any real art supplies. Make a color wheel with objects you have at home. Take a picture of it and post it to social media with the #thecrayonlab  and #foundobjectcolorwheel. You can also email it to me directly at thecrayonlab@gmail.com or my school email. Today is the day I want to hear from you Visual Compers!

Virtual Museum Tours

Hi Art Friends! 

While you are home you can still travel to someplace new. While you are there take on the role of an art buyer and make some choices! Use this handout to reflect on the museum you visit. You can print, fill out, and then send me a pic of your work (You will need to log-in to Office 365 to access the handout).

1.  A Walk Inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Touring the iconic New York City museum, this short 2 minute video is set to soft music and shows many famous works of art. Although the art pieces and artists are not labeled this video so great offers children a chance to quiz themselves. They can search in art reference books for the pictures they see in the video to confirm their guesses. Or they can select their favorite image and research it or the artist further.  

2. The Frick Museum in New York City

The Frick Museum in New York City is known for the collection of Old Master paintings.  The Frick’s virtual gallery tour not only shows images of various rooms but also allows viewers to click on items for an up close view and historical details.  All this while listening to a docent led tour.  It’s pretty awesome.  

3. Musee Du Louvre

Does it get any more iconic than the Louvre Museum.  The largest museum in the world, situated in Paris, France, has three virtual gallery tours.  You can visit their collection of Egyptian antiquites, the remains of the Louvre moat, or the recently restored Galerie d’ Apollon.  

4. In Our Time: The Museum of Modern Art

This hour-long episode of Great Museums explores the artwork found in New York City’s modern art museum. I love this video because it looks at how history chooses, remembers, and picks famous artists versus those who were popular in their own time. It also covers a lot of modern day artists and their works—something we don’t often find in our books.

5. Florence Italy: The Uffizi Gallery

This short 5 minute video follows Rick Steves as he tours this famous Italian gallery. He talks about some of the famous works of art on display there both by name and by artist with lots of close up videography so no details are lost.

6. Masterpieces from the National Gallery London

The National Gallery of London  houses the national collection of paintings in the Western European tradition from the thirteenth through the nineteenth centuries.  This museum offers a virtual tour of 18 rooms and the collections they hold.

7. Hermitage Museum

This short 12-minute video of the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia actually does not show many close up works of art, but the building and architecture itself is amazing to see.  

8. Musee D’Orsay

In this short 5-minute video, Rick Steves takes the viewer through this Parisian museum, highlighting works of art from the Idealists through the Realists and right to the Impressionist movement. There is abundant close detail of the actual brushstrokes of the Impressionist painters.

9. Van Gogh Museum

This concise, 4-minute recording tours the Amsterdam museum, highlighting as many as 30 or more works of art. Most of the artwork is labeled with the name and date in which it was painted too. It’s a comprehensive look at Van Gogh’s masterpieces.

10. The Dali Museum

This short, 5-minute video by Travel Through History examines the life of this master painter and explains a few pieces of work that are on display at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.

New things are exciting sometimes and although I know learning on-line is different for most of you I think it provides us with a fun opportunity to explore new ways of learning and engaging our interests. That said, I will be posting many things here to engage you creatively while we are apart from each other.
